Text-Based Video Editing: How to Edit Video by Editing a Transcript

how-to · beginner · 15 minutes

Descript’s core idea is unusual enough that it’s worth explaining before the steps: your video gets transcribed automatically, and editing the text transcript edits the video in sync — delete a sentence in the text, and that clip is removed from the timeline. For talking-head content (podcasts, tutorials, solo YouTube), it’s often faster than a traditional timeline editor.

Step 1: Upload and let it transcribe

Import your recording. Transcription accuracy depends on audio clarity — a clean mic input transcribes far more reliably than a laptop’s built-in mic, which matters because your edit is only as fast as your transcript is accurate.

Step 2: Cut filler words and dead air from the text

Look for “um,” “uh,” repeated words, and long pauses in the transcript and delete them there — the video updates automatically. This single step is usually where most of the time savings over a traditional editor come from.

Step 3: Remove full sentences or tangents by deleting text

Cutting a rambling explanation is as simple as selecting the sentence and deleting it, the same way you’d edit a document. No need to find the corresponding clip on a timeline first.

Step 4: Use Studio Sound or equivalent audio cleanup

If your recording has room echo or background noise, run the built-in audio cleanup before final export — a five-second fix that would otherwise require separate audio software.

Step 5: Export and verify sync

Text-based editing occasionally produces small sync errors around rapid cuts (mid-word deletions in particular). Watch the final export once at normal speed, not just a scrub-through, before publishing.

When this workflow doesn’t fit

Text-based editing works best for talking-head content. It’s not the right tool for heavily visual editing — b-roll-heavy videos, motion graphics, or multi-camera cuts still need a traditional timeline editor.
